We are excited to announce the successful completion of a pivotal focus group in Sofia, Bulgaria, as part of the Erasmus+ co-funded "Green Horizons Project" (Pr. No: 2024-1-LU01-KA210-VET-000243985). Hosted by the Private Profiled High School Educational Technologies, this event marked a significant step in developing an innovative approach to integrating green competencies into the education system.
This focus group is an essential component of Activity 1 in the Green Horizons Project: the development of an Assessment Tool for School-Based Learning (SBL) Initiatives. With a strong commitment to preparing students for a sustainable future, the session brought together 12 passionate teachers from various subjects, including languages (Bulgarian, German, English, and Spanish), natural sciences, history, geography, philosophy, design, and entrepreneurship.
During the 1.5-hour session, participants discussed how they are already embedding green competencies into their teaching and explored ways to expand these efforts across the curriculum. The insights gained during this focus group are invaluable in shaping our forthcoming assessment tool, which will help educators measure and enhance green-related skills in their students.
The Green Horizons Project, led by Luxembourg Creative Lab in partnership with High School Educational Technologies, is committed to fostering sustainability education across Europe. The project aims to empower teachers, schools, and students with the skills and resources necessary to tackle environmental challenges, ultimately contributing to a greener future for all.
The focus group generated insightful discussions about how sustainability concepts are being incorporated into different subjects, offering practical examples of how teachers can weave environmental education into their daily lessons. Here are a few of the highlights:
Foreign Languages: Teachers reported using eco-related vocabulary and environmental topics to enhance reading comprehension. By integrating sustainability into language learning, students not only gain new linguistic skills but also develop an understanding of global environmental issues.
Natural and Social Sciences: Conservation and environmental issues have long been a part of the sciences curriculum, and the teachers in this session reaffirmed their commitment to fostering student awareness about the impact of human activities on the environment.
Entrepreneurship: Green entrepreneurship has become a key focus, helping students explore how sustainability can be incorporated into business practices. By encouraging students to consider eco-friendly innovations and responsible business models, teachers are cultivating the next generation of environmentally conscious entrepreneurs.
Literature: The teachers in literature classes are introducing students to environmental themes through literary works. By analyzing stories and texts focused on nature and sustainability, students are encouraged to reflect on the human relationship with the environment and its implications.
The success of this focus group signals exciting progress for the Green Horizons Project. By bringing together educators from diverse disciplines, we are building a framework for integrating sustainability into education more comprehensively. The feedback from this session will directly inform the development of our assessment tool, which aims to support teachers in identifying and nurturing green competencies in their students.
Our goal is to ensure that every student gains the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to contribute to a sustainable future. Whether through learning eco-vocabulary in language classes, analyzing environmental literature, or exploring green entrepreneurship, we are committed to fostering a holistic approach to sustainability education.
As the Green Horizons Project moves forward, we will continue to collaborate with educators, schools, and communities across Europe to refine and implement our assessment tool. This is just the beginning of a long-term effort to reshape education to address the pressing environmental challenges of our time.
Stay tuned for further updates on our progress and how you can get involved in this initiative. Together, we can inspire and equip the next generation of students to be proactive in creating a greener, more sustainable world.
