Green Horizons Focus Groups, Luxembourg

We are thrilled to announce the success of a recent focus group held by Luxembourg Creative Lab, as part of the Erasmus+ co-funded "Green Horizons" Project (Project No: 2024-1-LU01-KA210-VET-000243985).

Focus Group on Service-Based Learning in Green Education – A Vital Step Forward

As part of the Green Horizons project, a key focus group interview was recently conducted in Luxembourg by the project lead, Luxembourg Creative Lab a.s.b.l. The session, which lasted 90 minutes, was expertly moderated by the President of the association, Mr. Tsvetomir Budakov, and served as an essential component of Activity 1: Development of an Assessment Tool for Service-Based Learning (SBL) Initiatives.

The primary objective of the focus group was to delve deeper into how green competencies can be seamlessly integrated into modern educational curricula, enabling learners to address today’s pressing sustainability challenges with confidence and skill. The session brought together key stakeholders, including educators, sustainability experts, and curriculum developers, to discuss innovative approaches and share insights on fostering an environmentally-conscious mindset within education systems.

During the 1.5-hour session, participants discussed how they are already embedding green competencies into their teaching and explored ways to expand these efforts across the curriculum. The insights gained during this focus group are invaluable in shaping our forthcoming assessment tool, which will help educators measure and enhance green-related skills in their students.

The Green Horizons Project, led by Luxembourg Creative Lab in partnership with High School Educational Technologies, is committed to fostering sustainability education across Europe. The project aims to empower teachers, schools, and students with the skills and resources necessary to tackle environmental challenges, ultimately contributing to a greener future for all.

Invaluable Insights from the Focus Group

During the focus group session, participants contributed a wide range of perspectives on both the theoretical and practical applications of sustainability in education. Their feedback is instrumental in shaping the assessment tool being developed under the Green Horizons project.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the session:

1. Clear and Consistent Signage

A recurring theme among participants was the critical need for clear and consistent signage to reduce confusion surrounding recycling and waste management. Participants stressed the importance of integrating public education campaigns, along with digital tools, to enhance awareness about sustainability practices. Additionally, strategically placed recycling bins, alongside informative signage, were highlighted as a simple yet effective method for encouraging better waste-sorting behaviors in educational settings.

2. Quantifying Green Competencies

Another central discussion point was the challenge of quantifying green competencies. The group explored how measuring the impact of green skills in real-world applications is crucial for validating the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives. This step was deemed essential not only for driving continuous improvement but also for scaling these efforts and ensuring that they lead to tangible, long-term environmental benefits. Participants expressed the need for well-defined metrics that could be used to track the progress of learners as they engage in green education programs.

3. The Power of Service-Based Learning (SBL)

The focus group emphasized the transformative potential of Service-Based Learning (SBL) in sustainability education. This hands-on, experiential approach was seen as a way to connect learners with real-world environmental challenges while simultaneously developing the practical skills necessary to create positive and lasting change. SBL enables participants to go beyond theoretical knowledge and engage in community-focused initiatives, fostering a deeper understanding of how sustainable actions can impact society at large.

The discussions also touched on how SBL can foster a sense of personal responsibility and empowerment among learners. By participating in service-based projects, students are not only gaining valuable skills but also becoming agents of change in their communities, contributing to a culture of sustainability that extends beyond the classroom.

Looking Ahead

This focus group marks a significant milestone in the Green Horizons project. The insights gained will be instrumental in refining the development of innovative tools and frameworks designed to promote green education. The Assessment Tool for Service-Based Learning (SBL) Initiatives, once complete, will serve as a valuable resource for educators, helping them implement sustainability-focused curricula that are both impactful and scalable.

As the Green Horizons team continues to push forward with this vital project, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for empowering learners to make a meaningful difference in addressing global sustainability challenges. Stay tuned for further updates on the project as we work towards shaping a brighter, greener future for education!
